Garthwaite Family History

Soothill, Batley

The Garthwaites I am descended from lived in the Soothill / Hanging Heaton area of Batley in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The earliest Garthwaite to move into the area, in my direct family tree, was George Senior Garthwaite. George was born in Thornhill on 10th October 1845, son of George and Jane Garthwaite. He moved to Dewsbury around 1870 and on to Soothill, Batley at some point between 1881 and 1885.

The map below shows Batley and Dewsbury. Hanging Heaton, with it's church St Pauls and Soothill are slightly right of centre.

Garthwaites Buried at Hanging Heaton, Batley

There are a couple of Garthwaite gravestones in Hanging Heaton St Pauls' churchyard I found during a visit early in 2006. To view a higher resolution picture click on the image.

Transcription: In Loving Memory of John Beloved Husband of Betsy Garthwaite Died Dec 8th 1939, Aged 69 Years ALSO Betsy Dear Wife of the above Died Jan 5th 1964, Aged 90 Years ALSO James, Dear Husband of Edith Eakin Died May 16th 1964, Aged 65 Years. NB: John Garthwaite was the son of George Senior Garthwaite. Edith Eakin (nee Garthwaite) was the daughter of John and Betsy.

Transcription: In Loving Memory of Willie Garthwaite of Soothill Died March 13th 1904 Aged 28 Years. Also Amy, Daughter of the Above, Died Dec 21st 1903 Aged 9 Weeks. Also George W Goldthorpe Died June 24 1928 Aged 43 Years. Also Ellen, Wife of the Above Died October 18th 1965 Aged 86 Years. NB: Willie Garthwaite was the younger brother of John on the previous gravestone. Ellen remarried after Willie's' death.
